#Start a SMIA University Chapter
SMIA university chapters are official student clubs established in Moroccan universities and engineering schools. They are the heart of our mission to promote artificial intelligence among students. These chapters allow us to decentralize our actions and reach talent wherever they are, across all regions of Morocco. Whether you are a student at a large public university in Casablanca or a smaller school in Oujda, starting a chapter gives you the tools and network to make a tangible impact on your campus. Each chapter operates with a degree of autonomy, allowing it to tailor its activities to local needs while remaining connected to the national SMIA network.
#Why Create a Chapter?
Creating a SMIA chapter at your institution offers many benefits:
- Organize events: Conferences, hackathons, hands-on workshops and training sessions around AI. You can invite renowned speakers and create unique exchange opportunities. Past chapters have hosted speakers from major tech companies and leading Moroccan research labs.
- Connect students: Build a dynamic community of AI-enthusiastic students on your campus, fostering mutual support and knowledge sharing. Many students find study partners, project collaborators, and even co-founders through their chapter.
- Access exclusive resources: Benefit from SMIA support for your initiatives and projects, including educational and technical resources. Chapters receive presentation templates, workshop materials, datasets, and access to our network of industry mentors.
- Develop skills: Gain valuable experience in leadership, team management and event organization, highly sought-after skills in the job market. Chapter leaders consistently report that their experience was a deciding factor in internship and job interviews.
- Expand your network: Connect with other chapters across Morocco and participate in national SMIA events. The annual SMIA conference brings together all chapters for a weekend of collaboration and knowledge exchange.
- Boost your CV: Leading a SMIA chapter demonstrates initiative, organizational ability, and a commitment to the AI community, all of which are highly valued by recruiters and graduate programs alike.
#Requirements
To open a SMIA chapter, you need:
- A sponsoring professor: A permanent faculty member who agrees to supervise the chapter and ensure its sustainability. The professor acts as a liaison between the chapter and the university administration, helping to navigate institutional procedures and secure room bookings and other logistical support.
- A student board: A team of at least 3 motivated students (president, secretary, treasurer) ready to commit. We recommend having additional members for vice-president and event coordinator roles if possible, as this distributes the workload and ensures continuity when board members graduate.
- A written commitment: A letter signed by founding members and the sponsoring professor, detailing the chapter's objectives. This letter should outline your planned activities for the first semester and explain how your chapter will contribute to SMIA's mission of promoting AI in Morocco.
- SMIA approval: Your request will be reviewed by the SMIA executive board which will assess the project's viability and seriousness. The board considers factors such as the diversity of planned activities, the strength of the founding team, and the level of institutional support.
#Creation Process
- Submit your request through our online form available on the SMIA website. The form collects basic information about your team and institution.
- Prepare your file including the commitment letter, list of founding members, and a proposed activity plan for the first semester. A well-prepared file demonstrates serious intent and significantly speeds up the review process.
- Wait for validation by the SMIA executive board (average processing time: 2 weeks). During this period, a SMIA representative may contact you for additional information or clarifications.
- Launch your chapter with an official inauguration ceremony attended by SMIA representatives. This ceremony marks the formal recognition of your chapter and is a great opportunity to attract new members and generate campus interest.
- Organize your first event within 30 days of validation to maintain momentum. Early success builds credibility and helps with member retention. Many successful chapters start with an introductory AI workshop or a guest lecture.
#Ongoing Support from SMIA
Once your chapter is established, SMIA provides continuous support to ensure its success. Each chapter is assigned a dedicated liaison from the national team who serves as a point of contact for questions, resources, and troubleshooting. Chapters also receive a startup kit containing branded materials, presentation templates, and promotional items to help with campus outreach.
SMIA organizes quarterly coordination calls where chapter leaders share experiences, discuss challenges, and learn from each other. A private online community allows chapter members to exchange ideas, ask for advice, and collaborate on cross-chapter projects. Chapters that demonstrate exceptional performance may also qualify for funding to host larger events or invite external speakers.
#Tips for a Successful Chapter
Running a successful chapter requires consistent effort and strategic planning. Here are some practical tips:
- Document everything: Keep meeting minutes, track event attendance, and maintain a handover document for the next board. Good documentation makes transitions smooth and preserves institutional knowledge.
- Build relationships early: Connect with your university's administration, other student clubs, and local industry partners. Strong relationships make it easier to secure venues, sponsorships, and speaking guests.
- Plan ahead: Create a semester calendar at the beginning of each term. Map out events, deadlines, and promotional periods so your team has clear targets throughout the semester.
- Prioritize onboarding: Run a welcome session at the start of each academic year to recruit new members and explain what your chapter offers. A strong start to the year sets the tone for everything that follows.
- Celebrate wins: Recognize members who contribute significantly. Public appreciation fosters a positive culture and encourages continued participation.
#Recommended Activities
- Monthly meetups: Presentations and discussions around current AI topics. These can range from introductory sessions for beginners to advanced technical deep-dives for experienced students.
- Technical workshops: Hands-on sessions on popular AI frameworks and tools like TensorFlow, PyTorch, LangChain, and Hugging Face. Workshops should cater to different skill levels to maximize participation.
- Collaborative projects: Encourage students to work on concrete AI projects with appropriate supervision. These projects can target local problems, participate in national competitions, or address challenges proposed by industry partners.
- Study groups: Form reading groups for seminal AI papers or structured learning tracks for students preparing for AI certifications or graduate studies. Regular study sessions help maintain consistent progress.
- Industry visits: Organize trips to local tech companies, AI labs, or startup incubators. Seeing AI in action in a professional setting is highly motivating for students.
- Participation in SMIA events: Represent your institution at national SMIA events, including the annual conference, hackathons, and the AI for Good challenge. Inter-chapter collaboration is strongly encouraged.
