PhD in Morocco: Complete Guide

Everything you need to know to prepare and succeed in your PhD in Morocco: procedures, duration, career prospects.

#PhD in Morocco: Complete Guide

You have completed your Master's degree, enjoyed the graduate experience, and caught the research bug. The next logical step is a PhD — but how do you navigate the transition in Morocco? This guide walks you through everything from understanding what a doctorate entails to the application process, funding, and career outlook.

#What Is a PhD?

A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is the highest university degree awarded worldwide. It qualifies holders to teach at the university level or pursue academic and scientific research careers. A PhD is awarded by universities and higher education institutions to candidates who submit a thesis based on original, in-depth research in their chosen field.

Most PhD programs require three to four years of full-time study (up to six years for part-time), during which the candidate completes original research presented as a thesis. Some programs accept a portfolio of published papers instead. In all cases, students must defend their thesis orally before a jury of examiners, typically lasting one to three hours.

#Master's vs PhD: Key Differences

A Master's program typically lasts two years and follows a structured classroom model where students complete coursework guided by professors. A PhD, by contrast, spans three or more years and emphasizes independent research under the supervision of a thesis director.

Career outcomes also differ. Master's graduates often move into strategic roles in companies and hold positions of responsibility. PhD graduates typically pursue roles in academia — professors, researchers, deans, department heads — or research-intensive positions such as R&D directors, scientific editors, consultants, financial analysts, and researchers at multinational corporations. PhD holders generally enjoy lower unemployment rates and higher earning potential than Master's graduates.

#The Doctoral Cycle in Morocco

Under Moroccan law (Official Bulletin No. 5674 of October 16, 2008), the doctoral cycle is a training program culminating in the award of a PhD after a successful thesis defense. According to Decree No. 2-04-89, Article 8, the standard preparation period is three years, extendable by one or two additional years upon approval by the head of the institution, based on a proposal from the director of the Centre d'Études Doctorales (CEDoc) and the thesis supervisor. In 2015, a third and final extension year was introduced (Decree No. 2-15-159).

Doctoral training is organized within CEDocs, established by university institutions under Articles 19 and 24 of Law No. 01-00. PhD candidates conduct research under their supervisor within an accredited research laboratory. Beyond research, doctoral students are expected to participate in teaching activities (invigilation, practical sessions, tutorials, student mentoring) and scientific events (conferences, doctoral days, methodology training). The required complementary training totals 200 hours.

#Admission Requirements

Admission to the doctoral cycle in Morocco is open to holders of a Master's degree (specialized or research) or an equivalent recognized diploma meeting the admission criteria set by the respective CEDoc. These criteria are proposed by the CEDoc's pedagogical team, specified in the program description, and adopted under Law No. 01.00.

#When and How to Apply

Admission announcements are typically published on university websites between September and October, with application deadlines between November and December for the same academic year.

The selection process generally involves three stages:

  1. Pre-selection based on your academic record and research proposal
  2. Written exam covering general questions on political, economic, financial, or social issues in Morocco and worldwide, as well as questions on research methodology (epistemological stance, methodology, research problem, context, fieldwork, and data collection/analysis methods)
  3. Oral interview — approximately 20 minutes covering your thesis project, knowledge of the doctoral cycle, research protocol, professional situation, and motivations

You will typically be asked to submit a thesis project document as part of your application.

The analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills developed during doctoral training are highly valued across industries.
